Tottenham Hotspur travel to Germany, to face the side currently 10th in the Bundesliga, with a view to regain some momentum following a stale 1-1 draw versus West Brom at the weekend, and to seize the initiative in their Champions League group. However, Bayer will provide stern opposition, in their imposing home ground, the BayArena.
Tale of the Tape:
Spurs are still unbeaten in domestic competition this season; in fact their only loss in all competitions this term came at the hands of Monaco at Wembley in this competition. They have won four of their last five in the league, and will be optimistic following the hard fought 0-1 win in Moscow last time out.
Leverkusen have had a somewhat mediocre start to their Bundesliga campaign, sitting in 10th place with three wins, three losses, and one draw. They are showing signs of form however, having won two of their last three in the league, including a very impressive 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund. The Champions League has been very symptomatic of their domestic start, with two draws from two matches so far.
Tottenham will be without Harry Kane and Toby Alderweireld, who are both likely to return to training next week, the Belgian sustaining slight nerve damage to his knee in the draw with West Brom, Kane returning from ankle ligament damage. Kyle Walker has been left in England to rest.
Spurs will have to watch out for Leverkusen’s stars in Javier Hernandez, Karim Bellarabi and Hakan Calhanoglu. Between them, they’ve chalked up ten goals and five assists already this term. Spurs would also be wise to watch out for young German talent, Julian Brandt.
Predicted Bayer Leverkusen XI:
Leno, Bender, Tah, Toprak, Henrichs, Brandt, Aranguiz, Kampl, Calhanoglu, Mehmedi, Hernandez
Predicted Tottenham Hotspur XI:
Lloris, Trippier, Dier, Vertonghen, Rose, Wanyama, Dembele, Sissoko, Alli, Eriksen, Son
Prediction: Bayer Leverkusen 2-3 Tottenham Hotspur
